You start out with Professor Oak asking you a whole bunch of questions. He will ask you what your name is and your rival's, and will generally explain the world of Pokemon to you. Then, you're set loose. Leave your house, and walk two steps on the grass. Professor Oak will come to you, but you will them be attacked by a Pikachu. Professor Oak will catch the Pikachu, and he will lead you to his lab. In the lab, touch the Pokeball and your rival Gary will take it from you. Professor Oak will give you Pikachu, and when you try to leave, Gary will battle you. He should be easy, but sometimes it's just impossible to beat him. Eevee is stronger than Pikachu. After you're done battling, just follow the route up and get to Viridian City.
You can't do much in this city, but first go heal your Pikachu. Along the way, you should have fought some Pokemon. After healing, go into the Poke Mart and the cashier will give you Oak's Parcel, in which you need to deliver back to Professor Oak. Go back to Pallet, and give it to Oak. He will give you and Gary a Pokedex, and you will be able to get a Town Map from Gary's sister. Train your Pikachu a little, and when you're done, you can go fight Gary. Go to the path to where it goes to the Pokemon League. Gary will have a Level 9 Spearow and a Level 8 Eevee. I recommend you to catch additional pokemon but it is possible to beat Gary by using only just Pikachu. After the battle, go back to the Poke Center, heal, and go up. The man will attempt to catch a Rattatta, but will fail. Keep going up to get to the Viridian Forest.
In the Viridian Forest, you can catch a Pikachu, Caterpie, and a Metapod. I recommend you catch a Caterpie for use later. Actually, catching Caterpie is a must. Train your Caterpie by fighting wild Caterpies and Metapods, and beat all the trainers in the forest. Keep training till it gets to Level 10, and it will evolve into Butterfree, and will learn Confusion. This is essential in beating the first gym leader, because it is almost impossible to beat him without Butterfree. Beat the forest, and get to Pewter City.
You should heal your Pokemon, and head straight to Pewter Gym. Fight the Jr. Trainer, and face Brock.
Brock will have a Geodude and an Onix at preferrably high levels, but if you have Butterfree, you'll take him to school. Beat him, and you'll receive the Boulderbadge and Bide.
After you beat him, you will be able to walk right out of the town. Walk right, and beat all the trainers. Once you get to the end, you'll arrive at the entrance to Mt. Moon. Mt. Moon is a long cave that takes a long time to solve, but you can really train your Pokemon here. The thing I recommend you doing is to go through all possible paths to gain experience. Right near the end, you'll fight a scientist that gives you a fossil if you beat him. Getting the Helix Fossil gives you Omanyte and the Dome Fossil Kabuto. Any one is fine. Right when you're about to leave, Team Rocket will appear to fight you. They're Jessie and James! The pokemon they use are powerful, and will be hard to beat. The key thing to beat them with is Butterfree. If your Butterfree has learned Sleep Powder, you can beat them easily but you will have to really fight if he doesn't have it.
Beat Team Rocket, and exit the cave. Keep going right, and you'll arrive in Cerulean City, one of my favorite cities. The first thing you should do is go to Nugget Bridge. Don't fight Misty, and go up. Gary will challenge you yet again. This time, his pokemon will be a lot stronger, and he will be quite hard. Beat him, and continue on. On Nugget bridge, you're going to need to fight 5 people to get the nugget. At the end, the Team Rocket member will fight you. Beat him. Then go up. You'll see Damien from the TV show and he'll give you Charmander. Funny how he's a lot nicer now. Keep going right, and beat all the trainers you see. You'll eventually arrive at Bill's House. Rescue Bill, and he'll give you the SS Anne ticket. Then go back to Cerulean City. Now go to Misty's gym. Misty will probably be one of hardest gym leaders in the whole game.
Misty only has a Staryu and a Starmie, but they are at high levels. Her Starmie will be the hardest. Pikachu is super effective against it, but as we have learned in the cartoon, even Electric pokemon can have trouble against strong water attacks. Starmie will constantly use Bubblebeam, a powerful water attack. Get lots of potions and keep using Pikachu and Butterfree. The first step to beating her is probably putting her Pokemon to sleep, and using Pikachu to beat them. Beating her yields the Cascadebadge, and you'll get Bubblebeam yourself.
After beating Misty, pat yourself on the back for beating the most difficult gym leader. Then, go to the house that has an Officer Jenny next to it. Go through the hole, and you'll see Team Rocket. Fight him, and he'll give you Dig. When you're done, follow the path and you'll eventually reach an underground tunnel. Follow the tunnel, beat all the trainers, and you'll arrive in Vermillion City.
The first thing you should do is go to the Pokemon Fan Club. Talk to the main leading man, and he'll give you a Bike Voucher. You can now get a bike for free at Cerulean City. Next, go heal your Pokemon. Then, go south of the city to where the dock is. You'll arrive at the SS Anne dock. Flash your ticket to the guard, and he'll let you in. You'll fight your rival on your ship, and I recommend you fight everyone. After doing that, find the captain of the ship and talk to him. He'll give you HM01 Cut. Leave the ship, and use Cut on the bush blocking Vermillion Gym. You can now fight Lt. Surge!
Lt. Surge only has a Raichu at Level 30. He is quite difficult, but you can just catch a Diglett at the cave east of Vermillion. You need to press the trash cans in the right order to open his door. Beat him to get the Thunderbadge, and Thunderbolt.
Next, now that you have the Thunderbadge, talk with Officer Jenny outside. She will give you Squirtle. Now, if you want to get Bulbasaur, you need to fight often with your Pikachu and don't let it get hurt. It also must jump up and down when you talk to it. If that happens, then go to Melanie in Cerulean City to get Bulbasaur.
You can now get Flash. If you have 10 pokemon, then go to Diglett's Cave and travel through it. Emerge, and go north. Go into one of houses, and talk with Professor Oak's Aide. He will hand you HM05 Flash. Now you can use it!
Next, you should go back to Cerulean City and cut that bush you saw before. Follow the east path, and beat all the trainers. When you get to the end, travel south, and you'll arrive at a Pokemon Center and a Cave. Heal your pokemon, and get into the cave.
This cave is Rock Tunnel, so you better have Flash. When I first played Blue Version, I didn't have Flash so I just beat the tunnel by walking blindly. Anyway, the same goes here like Mt. Moon. Go to every path to gain valuable experience. Once you emerge, go down to get to Lavender Town.
There isn't much you can do in this town, but you should be able to heal your pokemon and start buying some Great Balls. Travel west, and you'll arrive in Celadon City, another one of my favorite cities.
There's a whole lot of things you can do in Celadon City. You should probably go see the huge Pokemon Mart first to buy some cool supplies. You can also get Eevee by traveling in the back of town and going into the company building. You can buy evolution stones from the Poke Mart to evolve your Eevee into your choice. But probably the first thing you should do is go to the Gaming Center. Talk to Team Rocket at the poster, fight him, and follow him down the stairs. This turns out to be a Team Rocket base entrance!
The main thing to do here is just fight all the rockets. You'll need to get the cardkey from a rocket. After beating the rockets, make sure you talk to all of them because one of them gives you a cardkey. After that happens, go to the elevator and go to the highest floor. Fight the rockets, and you'll come face to face with Giovanni, leader of Team Rocket. He trains normal pokemon, and should be quite easy to beat but his Persian can do some serious damage.
After you beat him, he'll give you a Silph Scope that you can use in Lavender Town! By this time, you should have a Pikachu, Wartortle, Charmeleon, Ivysaur, and two other Pokemon. I chose Kadabra and Gyarados for the other two. Gyarados is very strong, and Kadabra is a very cool psychic. I replaced Butterfree with Kadabra, but you can keep him.
The next thing to do now is go to Celadon Gym. To do this, cut the bush south of town and follow the path to the gym. You'll fight several trainers before confronting Erika.
Erika will be quite difficult if you don't know what to use against her. Amazingly, Charmeleon is not a good choice against her. Ember is a weak fire attack and you cannot afford to let Erika attack you. When she does, she'll most likely poison, paralyze, or confuse you. Instead, use a psychic pokemon or plant pokemon. Plant pokemon can't get ailnesses and psychic pokemon can really pound plant pokemon. Erika has a Tangela, Gloom, Vileplume, and Weepinbell.
Beat her to get the Rainbowbadge, and Mega Drain. Too bad Giga Drain isn't in Yellow Version, but Mega Drain is powerful enough. Now that you have the Silph Scope, return to Lavender town and climb up the Pokemon tower. You'll fight your rival along the way. When you get to the top, beat all the rockets, and rescue Mr. Fuji. Mr. Fuji will give you a Poke Flute, and now you can proceed! Go south of Lavender town, and when you get to the Snorlax, play the poke flute. It will wake up and fight you. Try to catch it, because there are only two in the entire game. After beating it, just keep fighting trainers and follow the path to Fuchsia City.
In this city, you can catch a lot of weird pokemon in the Safari Zone and fight a gym leader. First go to the Safari Zone. You can catch many pokemon here, but the main thing you need to do here is find the Gold Teeth and get to the end. Once you get the Gold Teeth, get to the end as fast as you can. Once you get to the end, you'll receive HM03 Surf. Now exit the Safari Zone. Go near the gym, and give the Gold Teeth to the man. He'll give you HM04 Strength. Now you can fight the gym leader.
Koga has invisible walls all around him gym. When you fight him, he will use poison pokemon. The antidote for poison pokemon is psychic pokemon, so use a psychic. Koga has three Venonats and one Venomoth at very high levels so beware. Beat him to get the Soulbadge, and you'll also get Toxic.
You can now get to Saffron City. Go back to Celadon City, and get to the top floor of the Pokemon Mart. Buy a drink, and give the guard who doesn't let you go to Saffron the drink. He'll let you pass, and you can now go to Saffron City!
You can't do much here right now, but you can go buy a Poke Doll from Celadon and give it to the Mimic Girl for Mimic, and you can also get Psychic from Mr. Psychic. The first thing you should do here is go to Silph Company. This building is very big, and you will need to venture through a maze to beat it. I can't give a lot of tips, but the Card Key is on the 5th floor. You're going to need to get on a teleport block with a Rocket next to it. You'll teleport to another room, so step back onto the teleport block. You can now run past the rocket. Walk right, and you'll get the Card Key. You'll also fight Gary and Giovanni again, get the Masterball, and get Lapras. Once you beat Giovanni, the gym will now be open. There are actually 2 gyms. Go to the first one, and beat all the trainers. The man at the end will give you either a Hitmonchan or a Hitmonlee. Choose either one. The real gym is the right one, where Sabrina is. You're going to have to teleport all around the gym to find Sabrina.
Sabrina will be a tough opponent, but she only has an Abra, Kadabra, and an Alakazam all at Level 40 and up. You can use a Bug pokemon against her, but basically just keep fighting. Beat her to get the Marshbadge and Psywave. After that, you should now go to Cinnabar Island. The easiest way to get there is to go back to Pallet Town and surf down, but you can go to Fuchsia City and surf down and attempt to brave the Seafoam Islands. Once you get to Cinnabar Island, you should go to the Pokemon Mansion and explore it. Press the switches to open new doors, and get to the end of it. You'll get the secret key, and now you can fight Blaine!
Blaine's gym is weird, because you don't have to fight the trainers. You can just answer the questions right and you're on. Anyway, Blaine will have a Ninetales, Rapidash, and an Arcanine all at Level 40-54. Use a water type. After you beat him, you only have one gym match left! Go back to Viridian City, and you'll see that the gym is now open. You'll need to travel around the gym on those spinning blocks. The gym leader here is Giovanni, the leader of Team Rocket.
Giovanni will have a Dugtrio, Persian, Nidoqueen, Nidoking, and a Rhydon all at Level 50-55. He will be pretty hard, but I recommend you use a combination of a fire pokemon, psychic pokemon, and leaf pokemon. Beat Giovanni and you'll receive the Earth Badge and Fissure.
Now you can participate in the Pokemon League! Travel west of Viridian, and you'll end up in the main inspection building. Along your way, you'll get attacked by Gary, and he will test you to see if you are ready for the Pokemon League. He will be pretty hard, considering that his pokemon are at high levels. Anyway, get past the inspection building, and you'll end up on Victory Road. This cave is quite hard to solve, but you will need to use Strength a lot to push down boulders.
To help you on your battles on the Pokemon League, you can catch Legendary birds. Legendary birds are very powerful and are at high levels. Zapdos, the thunder bird, can be found at the end of the power plant. Moltres, the fire bird, can be found at Victory Road. And Articuno, the ice bird, can be found on Seafoam Island. Catching them is quite difficult, so you'll probably need to lower than HP a lot and then put them to sleep before catching them. You need to use an Ultra Ball to catch them, and putting them to sleep is an absolute requirement. Otherwise, your throw will always miss.
The recommended team of Pokemon you can use is Pikachu, Gyarados(or Dragonite, any of them is fine), Venusaur, Charizard, Blastoise, and Jynx. Jynx can do most of the work here since it can kill dragons, put pokemon to sleep, or use Psychic powers.
Now you're in the Pokemon League. Heal all your pokemon, and make sure you buy plenty of Full Restores, Hyper Potions, Revives, and Full Heals. Now you can fight the Elite Four!
The first person to fight is Lorelei, which is a trainer of Ice Pokemon. She has a Dewgong, Cloyster, Slowbro, Jynx, and Lapras. Beware, she may be the first trainer, but she can be pretty hard. Use a Thunder, Fire, or a Plant pokemon against her.
The second person to fight is Bruno, which is a trainer of Fighting and Rock Pokemon. He will have an Onix, Hitmonchan, Hitmonlee, another Onix, and Machamp. Use a plant, psychic, and flying pokemon against him.
The third to fight is Agatha, who trains evil pokemon. She has a Haunter, Gengar, Arbok, Golbat, and another Gengar. She is the most annoying trainer of all, because fighting ghost pokemon is no fun.
The last to fight is Lance. He will be the hardest of all, and he trains powerful dragon pokemon. He has a Gyarados, Aerodactyl, Dragonite, Dragonair, and another Dragonair. Use an Ice or and an Electric pokemon against him. Beware, though, his dragons can take anything. They all have certain moves that can kill any pokemon in one hit. Like his Dragonite has Hyper Beam, Blizzard, Thunder, and Fire Blast.
However, Lance is not the last person. The last person to fight is Gary, and he will be a lot harder than the rest of the group. I'm not even sure what he has, but I know that he has a wide variety of Pokemon. He will have an evolved Eevee, depending on how many times you beat him, and some other Pokemon. Beating him makes you the Pokemon master.
Now that you are a master, go back to Cerulean City and go into the Unknown Dungeon that was blocked before. Get to the end of it, and fight Mewtwo, the most powerful pokemon. He will be at Level 70, and will be nearly impossible to catch with an Ultra Ball. If you saved your Master Ball, use it! The rest of the things you can do now is catch and train as many pokemon as you can.
