Pinball
Pokemon has been a phenomenon for awhile now and this new addition to Nintendo's Pokemon universe is going to win over a legion of new fans.
Gaming companies have been aware for some time that Pinball titles do well. So, it's no surprise that Japan's leading game export, those cute and cuddly Pokemon have found their way to a Pinball game.
Gotta catch 'em all
The idea (for those who don't know) is to catch 'em all...or as the marketing slogan goes in full chorus:
"Gotta Catch 'em all!"
...all 150 Pokemon that is. Pokemon are animal type creatures that have extraordinary powers. These creatures are caught and trained by dedicated Pokemon trainers to combat one another and reach the lofty heights of universal Pokemon champion. Your goal as trainer is to achieve the rank of Master Pokemon Trainer.
In Nintendo's original Pokemon offering, the 150 Pokemon were divided in half and placed in either a blue or red cartridge. In order to catch all 150 Pokemon you were required either to gamelink, or buy both the Blue and Red cartridges.
Pokemon in a pinball world
In the pinball version, there are two tables provided. And yes, one is Red and the other is Blue. Of the two offerings the Blue is the easier to play. The Red table is definately more challenging but you'll need it if you're gonna catch all 150 of them.
Difficulty
Pretty straight forward and quick to pick-up on but slow to master. The biggest challenge is beating the timer. You've only got a limited window of opportunity in order to catch your Pokemon.
The actual interface is intuitively laid out. Use your "A" button to launch your Poke ball and to work the right hand flipper, and use your left arrow button to work the left
flipper.
Keeping the ball in play isn't too hard, and catching unevolved Pokemon can be accomplished fairly quick. The real challenge comes with trying to evolve your Pokemon.
You actually place a captured Pokemon in the Poke ball then launch him away. Your objective is to hit the various bumpers, holes and strategic spots on the table in order to rack up points and evolve your Pokemon into a higher form.
GamePlay
Lot's of fun and the ability to visit different towns right out of the Pokemon universe make for a great game. Nintendo also took advantage of the GameBoy Color's built in rumble pak to add to the experience.
Pokemon Pinball will find its way onto a whole lot of Game Boys this Summer and no-one will be disappointed.
A solid entry that is both challenging and fun to play.
